Nine hikers entered the Veyr Mountains in the winter of 1987.

Six days later, ten came back.

The tenth is Marek Vale.

Everyone in the expedition remembers him. They remember his jokes, his arguments, the meals he cooked, even knowing him before the journey.

The paperwork says he never existed.

The photographs are worse.

Day 1: nine people. Day 3: a distant figure. Day 5: Marek beside the fire. Day 6: Marek in the center of the group.

And now people who never climbed the mountain are beginning to remember him too.
