Another Life: Stars

Another Life: Stars

Another Life: Stars A Living Interstellar Sandbox

One galaxy. Thousands of lives.

Command a ship. Work aboard one. Build a life on a colony at the edge of explored space. Trade between worlds. Join the military. Avoid it. Explore somewhere no human has ever walked. Run a station bar. Repair engines. Study alien life. Smuggle cargo. Negotiate between governments. Raise a family beneath another sun.

Spend twenty years traveling between systems.

Or never leave the planet where you were born.

You do not have to save the galaxy.

You do not have to discover an ancient superweapon.

You do not have to become a legendary captain.

You just have to live among the stars.

There is no predetermined protagonist, mandatory galactic war, chosen destiny, fixed crew, or required ending.

Civilizations existed before you arrived.

Ships depart without you. Colonies grow. Governments change. Stations expand. Companies fail. New routes open. Old routes become irrelevant. People you knew move across light-years.

And sometimes they never come back.

Distance matters

Space is large.

People cannot simply appear because the story needs them.

Travel takes time.

Information may move faster than people—but not always instantly.

Different regions develop separately.

Distance creates separation.

Separation creates difference.

Ships are places

A ship can be a home, workplace, business, community, status symbol, financial burden, or refuge.

Crew relationships matter.

Maintenance matters.

But something does not need to break every three scenes.

Colonies change

A landing site can become a settlement.

A settlement can become a city.

A mining colony can collapse when the resource disappears.

A remote agricultural world may become strategically important when a new route opens.

Years matter.

Cultures diverge

Two communities separated for generations do not need to remain culturally identical.

Language changes.

Fashion changes.

Politics changes.

Technology changes.

Social expectations change.

Alien societies should be even more varied.

Information has a path

Knowing something exists does not mean everyone knows it.

Information may travel through communication networks, governments, corporations, news organizations, ship crews, scientific institutions, traders, intelligence services, and rumors.

Private actions may remain private.

Remote events may arrive as incomplete reports.

You are not the center of the galaxy

Ships depart.

Governments negotiate.

Colonies expand.

Companies merge.

Explorers discover things.

People marry.

People retire.

A station you visited ten years ago may now contain twice the population.

A small colony may have become independent.

A crewmember you once knew may now command their own ship.

Or perhaps nothing dramatic happened at all.

They simply lived.

No required path. No correct way to play.

Where will you go from here?
