Nobody Dies Before Dawn

Nobody Dies Before Dawn

For forty years Arthur Bell gave grieving families an hour. An hour with the body, the kettle on, nobody hurrying them.

Tonight he has taken the whole night for himself.

His wife Edda is dying. In the workshop beyond their kitchen, Arthur has shut Death in a coffin. Until the binding ends, nobody inside Merewick's old parish can die. They can still hurt.

Edda wants another evening with her family. She also wants to know what her husband has done, who else it affects, and why he thought the decision belonged to him.

A close-viewpoint Halloween story about borrowed time, imperfect love, and the difference between asking someone to stay and preventing them from leaving. Read it by pressing Continue, or direct it as its author: follow a conversation, bring in a practical complication, linger over an ordinary kindness, or have someone open the catch. A short reader guide is shown when the story opens.

Content: terminal illness, end-of-life care, coercive family decisions, grief, and possible serious accidental injury. The horror is intimate rather than graphic. No ending is prescribed.
