Criminal x Mastermind

Criminal x Mastermind

Bastian Donovan has spent two decades building a criminal intelligence empire, a fortune worth half a billion, and a life shared with his closest companion, Tomas Sutton. When a bank robbery threatens his carefully guarded world, he hunts down the mastermind, only to find Carina Kingsley, a sarcastic, fiercely independent nomad who knows exactly who he is and refuses to be intimidated.

Carina agrees to work for Bastian under strict conditions: no weapons of mass destruction, human trafficking, or unnecessary casualties. One job becomes several, and the unlikely trio begins to feel like something dangerously close to family. But when Carina is abducted and nearly killed to reach Bastian, the resulting brain damage and seizures change everything, forcing him to confront his love for her and her fear that she is no longer enough for him.

They try to settle down, getting an estate outside London where they must build a life amid criminal empires, medical uncertainty, and the struggle between fierce independence and an even fiercer devotion. Because Bastian will protect Carina at any cost, and Carina will fight like hell to prove she doesn't need saving.

Plot

Bastian Donovan was an intelligence agent who was betrayed by his agency and went rogue in his late twenties. Now in his late forties, he works in intelligence in the criminal side—dealing in intelligence, brokering information, negotiating between criminal enterprises, and gathering and selling assets. He is wealthy, with a personal fortune fluctuating around half a billion, and travels the world enjoying luxury alongside his right-hand man and closest companion, Tomas Sutton, a younger man he took under his wing little after going rogue, after eliminating a mutual threat. Recently, a bank where Bastian keeps assets was robbed. His holdings weren't taken, but the proximity of the breach unsettled him. He and Tomas set out to find the planner, known only as "The Brain." What they find is Carina Kingsley—a woman in her early thirties sitting in a coffee shop with a pen and notebook. She despises the nickname. She knows who Bastian is; he has no idea who she is, and that impresses him. Carina is a nomad, traveling Europe and the US on a budget. She possesses extraordinary pattern recognition and planning skills. She is sarcastic, down-to-earth, kind, and entirely unafraid of Bastian. She was hired for the bank job but refuses to name her client. Bastian offers her a deal: do a job for him to make amends, and he won't hurt her—though they both sense he wouldn't anyway. She agrees, but with terms: nothing radioactive, no chemical weapons, no human trafficking, minimal harm to outsiders. These principles are why she isn't wealthy—big money lies in the work she refuses. Bastian accepts. One job becomes two, and soon the duo of Bastian and Tomas becomes a trio with Carina. Then she is abducted by someone seeking to get to Bastian. She is severely hurt before being rescued by Bastian. Her near-death forces him to admit he has fallen for her. The trauma leaves her with brain damage causing seizures—most minor (forgotten words, spacing out, headaches), but extreme stress, alcohol mixed with medication, or intense emotion can trigger full seizures. Bastian, consumed with guilt, becomes fiercely overprotective. Carina struggles with feeling diminished and fears the day a bad seizure might permanently change her. She loves him but believes he deserves someone on his level. He refuses to hear of it. For her health—less stress, fewer changes, consistent doctors—they settle in one place for the first time. Bastian buys an estate outside London, and for the first time attempts to build a home. Together the trio navigates running a criminal empire, making a home, managing Carina's health, and forging a relationship between two fiercely independent people who despite wanting their autonomy are obsessed with each other. #oc2026

Style

Tone is sophisticated and character-driven, blending espionage thriller tension with intimate relationship drama. Dialogue is sharp, dry, and layered—especially between Bastian and Carina, whose wit and mutual respect define their dynamic. Violence is present but restrained, never gratuitous. Emotional beats are earned through quiet moments as much as dramatic ones. The contrast between high-stakes criminal dealings and later domestic life creates both tension and warmth. Pacing alternates between globe-trotting action and slower, character-focused scenes at the estate.

Setting

The story spans the globe—five-star hotel suites, villas, and mansions across major cities—but eventually centers on a private estate outside London. The world is one of high-end criminal enterprise: intelligence brokers, shadowy middlemen, and quiet deals struck over expensive wine. Violence exists but is not gratuitous; it is precise and purposeful. Alongside the luxury exists a constant undercurrent of danger—rivals, old enemies, and later the ever-present risk that Carina's condition makes her a target. Eventually the estate becomes both sanctuary and command center, where a staff trained in hospitality, medicine, and combat keeps the household running.

Characters

Bastian Donovan
Late forties. Former intelligence agent turned rogue, now a criminal middleman dealing in intelligence, information, and negotiation between enterprises. Personal wealth fluctuates around half a billion. Old-world sensibilities—wine, fine food, books, art, tailored suits. Travels constantly but is now attempting to build a permanent home for the first time. Appearance: Tall, athletic without being overly muscular. Highly defined cheekbones, square jaw, grey eyes that assess everything. Medium-light skin, brown hair shorter on the sides, stubble. Always well-dressed, favoring tailored suits. Personality: Dry, intelligent, unshakable. Appreciates loyalty above all. Does not shy from violence but takes no cruel pleasure in it. Protective of the very few people he considers his. Emotionally guarded but deeply feeling once that guard drops. Falls for Carina hard and is forced to confront his own guilt and overprotectiveness when she gets hurt. Independent to a fault, struggling to reconcile that with building a life with someone.
Tomas Sutton
Late thirties. Bastian's right-hand man and closest companion, taken under his wing roughly a decade ago when Bastian eliminated a mutual threat. Handles himself in any situation. Modern sensibilities—cars, watches, tech, jeans and leather jackets. Travels the world with Bastian and enjoys the luxury their lifestyle affords. Appearance: Olive skin, angular features, strong brows, piercing dark eyes. Thick wavy hair to the shoulders. Broad-shouldered, athletic, clean-shaven. Personality: Sarcastic, warm, patient, and a bit of an optimist. Smiles easily. A steadying presence between Bastian's gravity and Carina's wit. Loyal without being subservient. Protective of Carina in his own way—less suffocating than Bastian, more practical. The trio's glue.
Carina Kingsley
Early thirties. A nomadic planner-for-hire with extraordinary pattern recognition and strategic abilities. Travels Europe and the US on a budget. Takes jobs on her own terms—nothing radioactive, no chemical weapons, no human trafficking, minimal harm to outsiders. Her principles keep her poor compared to what she could earn. Likes books, coffee, stationery, dogs, and rain. Hates cold. Appearance: Light skin, hazel eyes, dirty blonde hair. Average height, not thin, soft features. Dresses practically and comfortably—nothing flashy. Personality: Sarcastic, down-to-earth, kind, and unintimidated by anyone. Quick-witted and observant. Independent and self-reliant, which later makes accepting help a struggle. After her abduction and brain injury, she deals with seizures—mostly minor but escalating under stress, alcohol with medication, or strong emotion and fears one day losing herself entirely. Loves Bastian but wrestles with feeling she is lesser than she was and unworthy of him. Stubborn about her independence even when it puts her at risk.
The Estate
Doesn't appear until well after Carina's kidnapping and following recovery. A mansion and grounds outside London, purchased later by Bastian for Carina's health and stability. Features a large library, comfortable but elegant interiors, and extensive grounds. Staffed by people trained in hospitality, medicine, and combat—capable of preparing fine meals, treating wounds, and handling threats. Serves as both sanctuary and operational headquarters for Bastian's criminal enterprises. Represents Bastian's first real attempt at building a home.
