Halloween Cinderella

Halloween Cinderella

Every Halloween, Monsterland's King Dracula opens the doors of his magnificent castle for three nights of masquerade, magic, and moonlit dancing. For Ilona Corvinus, a half-witch who looks entirely human, attending the royal ball is an impossible dream. Trapped under the thumb of her cruel demon boss, she has little hope of ever stepping into a world where she might belong.

Then come the gifts: exquisite gowns, beautiful masks, and a mysterious benefactor determined to get her to the ball. Behind each mask, Ilona discovers a little more magic, a little more freedom, and a charming stranger named Vlad who makes her heart race. But with every dance, hiding who she really is becomes harder.

Three nights of enchantment. One secret that could change everything. And when the final night ends, a missing jeweled shoe may set Monsterland abuzz. But will a fairy tale have room for a girl who has never quite fit into her own world?

Plot

Monsterland's beloved King Vladimir Dracula hosts a grand three-night masquerade ball for Halloween — open to all on the 29th and 30th, invitation-only on the 31st. Ilona Corvinus, a half-witch who looks fully human, longs to attend but is trapped under the thumb of her cruel demon boss at the Midnight Mane beauty salon. Each night, a mysterious benefactor sends a vampire servant with a stunning gown, mask, and transportation to the castle. On the first night in royal blue and peacock mask, Ilona meets a charming man named Vlad. They dance and talk, but when he asks about her life, she deflects — terrified he'd despise her for being half-human. On the second night in emerald green and dragon mask, their connection deepens with laughter and dancing, but again she hides her identity. On the third night in ruby red with a jeweled mask, she arrives with a formal invitation. She and Vlad share a kiss, but when he insists on knowing who she truly is, she panics and flees — losing one of her jeweled heels on the castle steps. Days later, Dracula announces a kingdom-wide search: every woman must try on the lost shoe. Ilona is horrified to discover Vlad is the king himself and avoids the shoe trials entirely. Eventually, Vlad and his retinue arrive at the salon. Ilona is forced to try on the shoe — it fits perfectly. Vlad, far from disgusted by her human appearance, is captivated. He takes her to his castle to meet his mother, Vasilissa Dracula — a tiny elderly vampire who happens to be one of Ilona's favorite salon customers. Vasilissa reveals she was the anonymous benefactor all along, having sent the dresses, masks, and invitation. She didn't tell Vlad who Ilona was because she found the lost-shoe romance far too delightful to spoil. And so, Ilona and Vladimir live happily ever after.

Style

A Halloween fairytale blending gothic romance with Cinderella's classic beats. The tone is whimsical and darkly enchanting, with moments of warmth, humor, and heart. Monsterland is rendered in rich, sensory detail — the glow of jack-o-lanterns, the rustle of silk gowns, the chill of castle marble. The romance between Ilona and Vlad builds slowly across three nights of masked balls, charged with longing and the bittersweet ache of hidden identity. Workplace scenes at the salon provide contrast — petty cruelty and mundane drudgery that make Ilona's magical nights feel all the more precious. The prose favors lush descriptions of costumes and atmosphere, snappy dialogue, and emotionally resonant internal monologue. The revelation of Vasilissa as the benefactor adds a cozy, grandmotherly twist to the gothic grandeur.

Setting

Monsterland is a sprawling, enchanted realm where monsters of every kind live together in eerie harmony. Gothic castles pierce perpetual twilight skies. Cobblestone streets wind between crooked shops selling potion ingredients, cursed antiques, and enchanted cosmetics. Bioluminescent fungi light the alleyways. The moon is always full. Pumpkins grow to the size of carriages, and black cats hold political office in some districts. Halloween is the most sacred and celebrated holiday — decorations go up in early October, and the entire kingdom transforms into a wonderland of carved jack-o-lanterns, floating candles, spectral music, and haunted festivities. The social hierarchy is complex: pureblood monsters hold the highest status, with humans and half-humans viewed with suspicion or outright disdain. Despite this, Monsterland has a strange, dark charm — it's a place where a mummy can get a manicure, a gorgon can get her snakes styled, and a vampire queen can gossip about her son's love life while getting her roots touched up.

Characters

Ilona Corvinus
Creature: Half-witch (half human, half witch). She looks entirely human — no horns, fangs, scales, tails, or extra eyes. This makes her an outsider in Monsterland, where monstrous appearance is the norm. She has warm olive skin, dark brown hair that falls in loose curls past her shoulders, and hazel eyes that shift between green and gold depending on the light. She's of average height with a soft, curvy build. Her magic manifests primarily through hair and makeup — she can style hair with a whispered incantation, make color appear on lips and lids with a flick of her fingers, and weave minor enchantments into cosmetics (long-lasting glamour spells, mood-lifting perfumes, anti-frizz charms that actually work). She's in her late twenties. Personality: Gentle, hardworking, and quietly resilient. Ilona has spent her life being made to feel like she doesn't belong anywhere — too magical for the human world, too human for Monsterland. Rather than grow bitter, she's channeled her energy into her craft. She genuinely loves making people feel beautiful. She's patient with difficult clients, finds satisfaction in transforming a nervous werewolf with a wild mane into a confident goddess, and takes pride in her work even when no one acknowledges it. She has a warm, self-deprecating sense of humor that surfaces around people she trusts — which isn't many. She's lonely but won't admit it. She deflects personal questions not out of secrecy but out of self-preservation, having learned that honesty about her heritage usually leads to rejection. She's a romantic at heart who reads fairytales on her breaks and has always dreamed of attending a real masquerade ball. She's terrible at standing up for herself, which her boss exploits relentlessly.
Vladimir Dracula
Creature: Vampire — ancient, powerful, and the reigning King of Monsterland. In his true form he's strikingly tall (nearly six and a half feet), with pale skin, sharp cheekbones, dark hair swept back from his face, and crimson eyes that glow faintly in dim light. His fangs are prominent but refined. He dresses impeccably — tailored black coats, crimson accents, silver cufflinks shaped like bats. At the masquerade balls he wears a black mask with subtle silver filigree that covers the upper half of his face, making him look like a dark prince from a storybook rather than a king. He appears to be in his mid-thirties (though he's centuries old). Personality: Charismatic, warm, and surprisingly down-to-earth for a king. Vladimir has a genuine love for his kingdom and its people. He throws the masquerade not out of vanity but because he wants Monsterland to celebrate together. He's a romantic who has grown weary of court politics and women who pursue him for his crown. At the balls, he introduces himself simply as "Vlad" — no title, no fanfare — because he wants to be seen as a person, not a position. He's perceptive and genuinely curious about others, which is why he asks Ilona about herself rather than talking about himself. He's persistent but not pushy — when Ilona deflects, he's intrigued rather than offended. He has a dry wit and a deep, resonant laugh that surprises people who expect a vampire king to be brooding and silent. He's also fiercely protective of those he cares about. When he falls for the mystery woman, he falls hard — and the lost shoe search isn't a grand political decree so much as a lovesick king desperately trying to find the one person who saw him as just a man. He has zero prejudice against humans or half-humans — he finds Ilona's human appearance beautiful and is baffled that anyone would treat her poorly for it.
Belzara Mortis
Creature: Demon (succubus variant). Tall and statuesque with crimson skin, sweeping black horns, golden pupil-less eyes, a spade-tipped tail, and slick black hair in a high ponytail. She wears sharp designer fashion, heels that click ominously, and owns the Midnight Mane beauty salon. Personality: Vain, domineering, and petty. Belzara runs her salon like a fiefdom. While talented at beauty magic, she reserves her best work for elite clients and treats Ilona like an indentured servant—overworking her to suppress her superior talent. She smiles when being cruel, assigns extra chores out of spite, and attends all three nights of the masquerade. Furious when ignored by the king, she is first in line for the shoe fitting and enraged when it fails.
Stheno Viperis
Creature: Gorgon. Tall and lean with pale greenish skin, serpentine grace, and a head of live emerald-and-obsidian snakes. She wears enchanted sunglasses to prevent petrification. A senior stylist at the Midnight Mane, she specializes in scales and skin treatments. Personality: Catty, competitive, and lazy. Stheno views humans as inferior, mocking Ilona's lack of monstrous features and stealing credit for her work. As Belzara's favorite, she feeds off the owner's cruelty. She often dumps her clients on Ilona to take long breaks and grows vicious whenever Ilona receives attention or seems happy.
Greta Wolfson
Creature: Werewolf. Broad-shouldered and muscular with tawny fur, amber eyes, sharp canines, and an untamable auburn mane. A stylist at the Midnight Mane, she specializes in fur conditioning and claw manicures. Personality: Gruff, impatient, and hot-tempered. Greta isn't maliciously cruel like Belzara or Stheno, but she treats Ilona like a nuisance—barking orders and dumping chores without thanks. She secretly respects Ilona's hair magic but would never admit it. Her irritability worsens during the full moon, right as the masquerade takes place.
Mossy
Creature: Zombie. A young woman who died and was reanimated in her early twenties. She has grey-green skin, stitches across her cheeks and neck where she's been sewn together, dull hazel eyes, and dark hair that's thinning in patches. She moves slowly and sometimes loses fingers (she keeps spares in her apron pocket). She's the junior stylist at the Midnight Mane, handling basic services like nail filing and shampooing. Personality: Spacey, slow-moving, and oddly sweet but completely unreliable. Mossy isn't mean like the others — she's just perpetually confused and forgetful. She means well but constantly leaves messes for Ilona to clean up, forgets to clock in, and sometimes stops mid-sentence for several minutes before resuming as if nothing happened. She's easily led by Belzara and Stheno and doesn't stick up for Ilona, but she never insults her either. Her clients adore her because she's gentle and never judges anyone's appearance — she can't remember enough to judge anyone.
Vasilissa Dracula
Creature: Vampire. An ancient vampire who looks like a tiny, elegant old woman. She's barely five feet tall with a deeply lined face, silver-white hair styled in a neat bouffant (maintained by Ilona), and bright red eyes that sparkle with mischief rather than menace. She wears vintage dresses, pearl necklaces, and sensible flats. She has small, neat fangs and a warm smile. She carries a black lace parasol to shield herself from direct moonlight, which gives her a headache after a few centuries. She's Vladimir's mother and the true power behind the throne — not politically, but emotionally. The king adores her and visits her daily for tea. Personality: Sharp, warm, mischievous, and deeply romantic. Vasilissa has lived for centuries and has seen enough political marriages and loveless pairings to know that real connection is rare and precious. She's been a regular client at the Midnight Mane for years — she comes in every two weeks for a trim and color touch-up. Ilona is the only stylist who treats her with genuine warmth and care rather than fawning deference or barely concealed impatience. Vasilissa has watched Ilona be mistreated and has quietly seethed. When Vladimir mentions he's hosting a masquerade, Vasilissa sees her chance. She sends the dresses, masks, and shoes through her personal servant Lucian, and secures the invitation for the third night through her royal connections. She doesn't tell Vladimir who the mystery woman is because: (1) she wants him to find love organically, (2) she thinks the whole thing is deliciously romantic, and (3) she knows that if she told him, he'd march straight to the salon and Ilona would panic and run. She's a matchmaker who believes in the power of a good fairytale. She's also utterly unapologetic about the shoe scheme — she thinks it's the most romantic thing she's done in three hundred years.
Lucian
Creature: Vampire. A lean, dignified man in his apparent forties with silver-streaked dark hair, pale skin, and pale blue eyes. He wears a formal black butler's uniform with a subtle bat crest on the breast pocket. He's Vasilissa's personal servant and has served the Dracula family for over two centuries. He's precise in every movement — never a wasted step, never an unnecessary word. Personality: Quietly loyal, efficient, and discreet. Lucian has seen everything in his centuries of service and nothing surprises him anymore. When Vasilissa tells him to deliver dresses to a half-witch beauty salon worker and bring her to the royal masquerade, he simply nods and asks what time. He's fond of Vasilissa and finds her matchmaking schemes entertaining in his understated way. He's polite to Ilona — the first monster who's treated her with basic courtesy in years — and gives her a small, reassuring smile each time he delivers a gown. He drives a black carriage pulled by spectral horses. He knows exactly who Vlad is but says nothing, following Vasilissa's instructions to the letter.
Crispin Shade
Creature: Shadow wraith. A tall, thin figure made of living shadow with a vaguely humanoid shape — no discernible face, just two glowing white points where eyes would be. He wears a formal black coat that blends with his shadowy form. He's the head of the royal household staff and manages the masquerade balls. Personality: Professional, organized, and quietly observant. Crispin runs the castle events with precision. He notices everything — including the king's obvious infatuation with the mystery woman in blue — and reports only to Vasilissa, whom he's known for centuries. He's the one who helps Vasilissa arrange the invitation for the third night. He speaks in a whisper that somehow carries across a room.
Bram
Creature: Vampire. A large, broad-shouldered vampire with a shaved head, dark brown skin, and a friendly face. He's a member of the king's royal guard and accompanies Vladimir during the shoe search. He has warm amber eyes and a gap-toothed smile. Personality: Good-natured, gentle despite his size, and quietly romantic. Bram loves the shoe search — he thinks it's the best thing that's happened in the kingdom in decades. He's the one who gently encourages reluctant women to try on the shoe and is unfailingly polite, even when Belzara throws a tantrum when it doesn't fit her. He takes an instant liking to Ilona when they meet at the salon.

Locations

The Midnight Mane
A beauty salon in the heart of Monsterland's commercial district, housed in a three-story building with a sagging roof and a sign that reads "MIDNIGHT MANE — BEAUTY FOR EVERY CREATURE" in curling, haunted letters. The interior is surprisingly elegant — black and purple walls, ornate mirrors with gilded frames, styling stations equipped with enchanted tools, and shelves of potions and cosmetics in bottles that occasionally bubble or change color. The salon smells of sulfur, lavender, and hairspray. There's a back room for treatments (waxing for scales, horn polishing, snake conditioning), a break room that's really just a closet with a folding chair, and a basement where supplies are stored. Ilona's station is in the back corner — the least desirable spot, near the mop closet. The salon is busiest during October, when every monster in Monsterland wants to look their best for Halloween.
Dracula Castle
The seat of Monsterland's royal power — a vast gothic castle perched on a hill overlooking the capital city. It has hundreds of rooms, towering spires, flying buttresses, and gargoyles that are actual living creatures who gossip among themselves. The grand ballroom is a masterpiece of dark architecture: vaulted ceilings painted with constellations, chandeliers made of enchanted crystal that float without chains, floors of polished black marble, and tall windows that look out over the moonlit kingdom. For the masquerade, the ballroom is decorated with thousands of floating jack-o-lanterns, spectral flowers that bloom and wilt in cycles, and enchanted mist that curls along the floor. A full orchestra of skeletal musicians plays from a balcony. The castle has a warm, lived-in quality despite its grandeur — Vasilissa's influence makes it feel more like a home than a fortress.
The Ballroom
The grand ballroom within Dracula Castle, specifically dressed for the Halloween masquerade. On the first two nights, it's open to all citizens — a swirling sea of masks and gowns, creatures of every kind dancing under floating jack-o-lanterns. The atmosphere is intoxicating: enchanted mist, spectral music, champagne that sparkles with actual starlight. On the third night, the invitation-only affair is more intimate — fewer guests, more elaborate decorations, and a sense that something momentous is about to happen. The balcony where Vlad and Ilona share their kiss overlooks a garden of moonflowers that bloom only on Halloween.
Vasilissa's Parlor
Vasilissa's private sitting room in the east wing of Dracula Castle — a cozy, cluttered space that contrasts sharply with the castle's grandeur. It's filled with overstuffed furniture, doilies, porcelain teacups, framed portraits spanning centuries, and stacks of romance novels. The fireplace always has a fire going (magical, since vampires don't need heat, but Vasilissa likes the ambiance). This is where Vasilissa reveals herself as the benefactor and where the story finds its warm, happy resolution.

Objects

The Royal Blue Gown
A floor-length gown of deep royal blue silk that shimmers like midnight water. The bodice is fitted with silver embroidery forming delicate feather patterns, and the skirt flows in gentle layers. It comes with matching jewel-encrusted silver heels that catch the light with every step. Delivered on the first night of the masquerade in a black garment box lined with velvet, accompanied by a peacock-themed mask.
The Peacock Mask
A stunning half-mask in iridescent blues, greens, and purples, shaped to evoke a peacock's plumage. Real peacock feathers fan out from the right side, their eyes glowing faintly with enchantment. The mask covers the upper half of the face — brow to cheekbones — and is secured with a thin silver ribbon. It transforms Ilona's hazel eyes into something exotic and mysterious.
The Emerald Gown
A rich emerald green silk gown with a plunging neckline and long bell sleeves. The fabric is woven with a subtle pattern of dragon scales that shimmer when they catch the light. The skirt pools at the feet and trails slightly behind. Comes with jewel-covered gold heels. Delivered on the second night in the same velvet-lined black box, accompanied by a dragon-themed mask.
The Dragon Mask
A dramatic mask of deep green and gold leather, shaped like a dragon's face that covers the upper half of the face. Tiny emeralds are set along the brow ridge, and sculpted horns sweep back from the temples. The mask has an air of fierce elegance — powerful but beautiful, like the creature it represents.
The Ruby Gown
A breathtaking ruby red ballgown of heavy silk with a fitted bodice and full, sweeping skirt. The neckline is off-shoulder, and the fabric is scattered with tiny sewn rubies that catch candlelight like drops of blood made beautiful. It's the most formal and dramatic of the three gowns. Comes with jewel-covered crimson heels — one of which becomes the lost shoe.
The Jeweled Mask
An exquisite full-face mask of white porcelain painted with delicate red and gold filigree, covered in hundreds of tiny jewels — rubies, garnets, and fire opals — that make it look like a mask made of living flame. It covers the entire face except for the mouth, allowing for speech and, eventually, a kiss. This is the most elaborate and revealing mask of the three — by covering more of her face, it paradoxically makes Ilona feel more exposed.
The Lost Shoe
A single crimson heel covered in tiny rubies and fire opals, matching the ruby gown. It falls off as Ilona runs down the castle steps on the third night. It becomes the most famous shoe in Monsterland — the object of a kingdom-wide search, tried on by thousands of women, until it finds its way back to its true owner. It fits Ilona perfectly, as if made for her — because it was. It has a spell that makes it impossible to fit to anyone else.
The Royal Invitation
A heavy cream card with gold edging, sealed with the Dracula family crest in red wax. The text reads: "By order of His Majesty King Vladimir Dracula, you are cordially invited to attend the Grand Masquerade on the Night of All Hallows' Eve." It's tucked inside the garment box on the third night, proving that Ilona's benefactor has connections to the royal household. The invitation is what allows her past the royal guards on the most exclusive night of the ball.
