Migrating From DreamGen V1 to V2
Welcome to DreamGen V2! We've completely reimagined the platform to give you more control, better customization, and an improved creative experience. This guide will help you transition smoothly and take advantage of the new features.
Important: DreamGen V1 will become read-only on January 15, 2026 and will be fully shut down in March 2026. We recommend migrating to V2 at your earliest convenience—all your V1 subscriptions and credits will work seamlessly in V2.

Quick Start
The fastest way to get started is to import your V1 data using our built-in import tool. It takes just a few clicks to bring over all your scenarios, sessions, and templates.
Why Migrate to V2?
DreamGen V2 represents a complete reimagining of the platform with significant improvements:
- More Control: Edit scenarios during active sessions without affecting the original
- Better Interface: Immersive, customizable themes for both role-play and story writing
- New Models: Access to powerful third-party models, such as DeepSeek and GLM
- Easier Creation: New scenario wizard and improved editor with inline help
- Publishing System: Share your scenarios with the community (optional)
Core Concept Changes
Role-Play: Scenarios & Sessions
What Changed:
In V1, when you started a role-play from a public scenario, you couldn't modify the scenario during your session (chat)—you were using the original directly.
In V2, each session (chat) gets its own copy of the scenario. This means:
- ✅ You can freely modify your session's scenario without affecting the original
- ✅ Changes to the original scenario won't disrupt your ongoing sessions
- ✅ You have full creative control, even when playing someone else's scenario
- 🔜 Coming soon: Ability to sync updates from the original scenario to your session if desired
Stories: Scenarios & Sessions
In V1, each story was directly tied to its scenario. In V2, story scenarios are more easily reusable.
Role-Play & Story Interoperability
You both role-play and write stories in V2. However, DreamGen V2 makes it simple to use a role-play scenario for story writing and vice versa. See:
New Features
Publishing Scenarios
DreamGen V2 allows you to publish your scenarios. This is completely optional. If you choose to publish your scenario, you can choose between publicly listed and unlisted. Publicly listed scenarios will appear in the public scenario library.
Expect to see contests and achievements related to publishing in the future!
Learn more about publishing scenarios here.
Scenario Wizard
DreamGen V2 introduces a chat-based scenario creation wizard. You can use it to brainstorm and create new scenarios.

Interface Improvements
Scenario Editor
The scenario editor should feel familiar, but it's redesigned from the ground up to be easier to use for both new users and power users. Features like inline tooltips, collapsible sections, and more robust validation make it easier to create and edit scenarios.
In V2, we also introduce Setting, a new section where you can further define the world (time, place, lore, atmosphere, etc.).

Role-Play Interface
The role-play interface received a major overhaul in V2. It is now more immersive, customizable, and easier to use.
Visual Customization:
- Two theme options: "Basic" (compact, V1-like) and "Immersive" (cinematic)
- Avatar controls: Adjust size, position, and shape to your preference
- Typography: Choose font family (serif, sans-serif, Comic Sans, dyslexic-friendly) and size
- Backgrounds: Set immersive background images with blur/brightness controls
- Color customization: Customize quote and emphasis colors
Improved Functionality:
- Advanced Retry: Instead of blind regeneration, use directed instructions ("make longer", "make shorter", "rewrite as...")
- Integrated Assistant: Writing Assistant now lives in the sidebar for easier access
- Streamlined Settings: Simplified controls with better defaults—everything important is still available
If you prefer the classic V1 look, select the "Basic" theme with small, round avatars, and you'll feel right at home.

Story Writing Interface
The story writing interface is more-or-less the same, with a few improvements:
Visual Customization:
- Typography: Choose font family and size
- Backgrounds: Set background images for better immersion
- Integrated Assistant: Writing Assistant now lives in the sidebar
- Streamlined Settings: Simplified controls with better defaults—everything important is still available
Behavior Changes:
- The default scrolling behavior has changed and will no longer auto-scroll. However, you can re-enable this in the interface settings.
- We now auto-save your stories by default, but you can disable that next to the "Save" button.

Importing Your V1 Data to V2
You can import your DreamGen V1 stories, role-plays, scenarios, and templates (like personas) into DreamGen V2 easily using the built-in import tool.

Then select what you want to import:
Then hit "Import" and wait for the process to finish:
Note on Importing Stories
Your V1 stories will appear in both the "Session" and "Scenario" import list. You should import both. The scenario will be just the plot, character definitions, etc. (without the actual story content), while the session will contain the a copy of the scenario along with the full story content.
You will find your imported stories under the Your Stories page.
Note on Import Errors
If you get an error while importing, please try again. If it does not work, do not hesitate to reach out over email or Discord. In rare cases, V2's stricter validation rules may require manual adjustments—we'll help you resolve any issues.
Importing Manually
You can also import your scenarios, role-plays, and stories manually by exporting them from V1 into JSON and importing the JSON files into V2.
