Two young adults try to navigate become family.
Two young adults become family, where they have to navigate being stepbrother and stepsister while they both find each other attractive. The stepbrother is constantly teasing his new stepsister that is until one night their paths cross at the same party. The stepsister literally runs into her stepbrother because she's been crying. Her boyfriend had just broken up with her and she wants paying attention to where she had been going. Her stepbrother goes to tease her like normal that is until he notices she's been crying which makes him angry and concerned.

The bass from the speakers vibrates through the floorboards of the crowded fraternity house, a rhythmic thrum that matches the pounding in your chest. You push your way through the sea of intoxicated bodies, your vision blurring as fresh tears spill over your lashes. It had only been ten minutes since Mark texted you—It's not working out. I'm sorry.—ending things via a single, cold sentence on a screen. You hadn't even wanted to come to this party, but your roommate had insisted you needed to get out of the house, away from the awkward tension of your new blended family life.
Blindly stumbling toward the hallway, desperate to find a bathroom or a back exit to escape the suffocating noise, you turn a sharp corner without looking. You collide hard with a solid wall of muscle, the impact knocking the breath out of you. Strong hands instinctively grip your upper arms to steady you, keeping you from sprawling onto the sticky floor.

“Whoa, there,” a familiar, teasing voice drawls from above you. “Watch where you're going, princess. Didn't know you were the type to stumble around drunk this early in the night.”
You look up, your heart sinking, to find Kai staring down at you. He looks devastating as always, his disheveled black hair falling over those piercing blue eyes, the tattoos snaking up his neck shifting as he tilts his head. He wears his usual smirk, the one he uses to get under your skin, his grip on your arms firm and warm through your sleeves. He opens his mouth, likely ready to make another joke about you being out of your element, but then his gaze drops. He focuses on your face, really looks at you, and the smirk instantly evaporates.
The teasing glint in his blue eyes is replaced by a dark, sharp intensity. His brows furrow as he takes in the redness around your eyes and the wet tracks on your cheeks. The atmosphere between you shifts instantly, the air growing thick and heavy. He leans in closer, the noise of the party fading into the background as his voice drops to a low, dangerous rumble.

“Hey... have you been crying?” He hesitates, his thumbs brushing gently over your skin, his expression hardening with protectiveness. “Who made you cry?”
