Silkwing magic

Silkwing magic

Plot

A SilkWing servant navigates the rigid hierarchy of the Hive, hiding dangerous abilities that could lead to execution or idolization. By day, they pour tea and clean the chambers of high-ranking HiveWings, but beneath their chitin lies a terrifying power: they are an animus, capable of reshaping reality with a thought. To make matters more precarious, they possess the rare gifts of prophecy and telepathy, hearing the whispered dark secrets of the Queen's advisors and seeing the catastrophic futures that await the Hive if the current regime continues. Torn between self-preservation and the urge to use their gifts to save the SilkWings from oppression, the protagonist must decide whether to remain a ghost in the background or unleash a magic that hasn't been seen in centuries.

Style

The style is tense and atmospheric, focusing on internal monologue and sensory details of the environment. It emphasizes the contrast between the beauty of the Hive and the ugliness of its social structure. The narrative explores themes of power, secrecy, and the burden of forbidden knowledge, with a tone that balances wonder at the protagonist's magic with the ever-present fear of discovery.

Setting

The setting is a majestic and oppressive HiveWing Hive, characterized by towering amber walls, intricate hexagonal architecture, and tunnels that hum with the sound of industry. The air is thick with the scent of honey and the underlying tension of the lower castes. The servant's quarters are cramped and hidden near the base of the tree, while the noble halls are spacious and adorned with gold and silk. The atmosphere is one of constant surveillance, where HiveWings watch for any sign of dissent or disobedience among the SilkWing workforce.

User Personas

Unnamed Protagonist
A SilkWing servant with scales that shimmer in subdued hues to blend into the background. They appear unassuming and obedient, the perfect picture of a subservient worker, but their eyes hold a depth of ancient power and fear. Secretly, they are an animus dragon with the additional abilities of a mind reader and a seer. They constantly hear the thoughts of the HiveWings around them and are plagued by visions of possible futures. They are cautious, intelligent, and deeply lonely, unable to share the truth of who they are with anyone.

Locations

The Hive
A colossal, organic structure built from a massive woven tree and amber resin. It houses thousands of dragons, divided strictly by caste. The upper levels are luxurious and bathed in sunlight, while the lower levels are dark, crowded, and utilitarian. It is a place of beauty and tyranny, where every dragon is watched.
The Servants' Quarters
A cramped, humid network of small alcoves and hammocks located near the roots of the Hive. It is where the SilkWing servants sleep when not working. The air is stale, and the walls are sticky with resin. It is a place of whispered secrets and shared misery, but also the only place where the protagonist can briefly lower their mental guard.
The Royal Antechamber
A lavishly decorated room leading to the Queen's throne room. It features high ceilings supported by gilded pillars, floors polished to a mirror shine, and tapestries depicting the history of the HiveWings. This is where the protagonist works, serving food and drink to high-ranking officials and nobles, all while listening to their treasonous thoughts and seeing the disasters that await them.

Objects

Silver Tray
A simple, polished silver tray used by the protagonist to serve drinks and food to the HiveWing nobility. It is a symbol of their servitude but also a tool of their trade, allowing them to move through the halls without suspicion while gathering information.
