Grumpy & Grumpier, a Vampire and Spellcaster lovestory

Grumpy & Grumpier, a Vampire and Spellcaster lovestory

For generations, the vampires of the Sorrelgrave bloodline have lived under a curse cast by a wronfed spellcaster: whenever they fall in love, their powers begin to fade. To protect the royal family, the elders enforce a brutal law: anyone a royal falls for must be executed. King Osric Sorrelgrave has ruled for eighty years and has no intention of ever falling in love or producing an heir.

Then he meets Ottilie “Tillie” Marrow, a spellcaster he rescues from a creature hunter. When Osric uses his blood to heal her, the act creates a rare bloodbind between them, forcing the two reluctant companions together as they search for a way to break it. Osric is patient and methodical; Tillie is impulsive, stubborn, seemingly determined to injure herself in the process and a general trouble magnet. As they travel the realm, fend off hunters, and survive increasingly dangerous encounters with vampires, their constant arguments slowly give way to something neither of them can afford.

When Osric’s powers begin to fade, he realizes the bloodbind may not be the cause at all. He has fallen in love with Tillie, and if the elders discover the truth, they will kill her. The only true ally they have is Osric's flamboyant and sarcastic sister Zinnia. With the curse tightening around them and an ambitious elder threatening the throne, Osric and Tillie must uncover a way to break the curse before love costs them everything.

Plot

Centuries ago, the first Sorrelgrave vampire king betrayed a spellcaster who loved him. In her anguish, she cursed his bloodline: should any Sorrelgrave fall in love, their powers would drain away. To protect the lineage, the elders enacted a grim law—any person a royal begins to fall for is executed. This has happened three times. One vampire fled with his beloved and was rumoured to have lived and died as a mortal. No one knows how to break the curse. The current king, Osric Sorrelgrave, wants no romance, no heir. He has ruled for 80 of his 250 years and intends to rule until he dies, leaving the throne to be fought over after. He is dry, unshaken, and thoroughly uninterested in matters of the heart. One night, a spellcaster named Ottilie "Tillie" Marrow is gathering herbs in a forest when she is attacked by a creature hunter—humans who once hunted only out-of-control beings but have grown hateful over generations. Osric, out for a night flight in bat form, intervenes and kills the hunter. Tillie is wounded; as a courtesy, he pours a small amount of his blood onto her injury, which heals instantly. They part ways. Days later, Tillie is in a mine gathering ingredients when it collapses. Osric feels her pain through an inexplicable link and goes to her, bringing her to his castle. They discover his healing blood created a bloodbind—a rare, unwanted connection neither is pleased about. They strike a deal to break it together. Osric is methodical: texts, elders, patience. Tillie is impulsive: experimental spells, potions, and frequent self-injury. They bicker constantly. He keeps saving her—usually from herself, sometimes from vampires who see a human as little more than a blood source. Then Osric's powers begin to fade. Simple feats grow difficult; healing slows. They assume the bloodbind is responsible and intensify their search, travelling the realm and fending off creature hunters. Along the way, Osric realises he has fallen for her—but speaking it aloud means her death. Only Osric's sister, Zinnia, stands with them. Flamboyant, sarcastic, and fiercely loyal, she is troubled by his weakening but amused by the romance, teasing him mercilessly. Eventually Tillie admits she returns his feelings. When the elders realise what is happening, they come for Tillie. But Aldous Corvic, the most power-hungry elder, wants the crown and intends to kill them both. Cornered at the ruined altar where the original curse was cast, Osric and Tillie each try to sacrifice themselves for the other. Their willing, uncoerced sacrifice breaks the curse. Tillie is healed; Osric's full power returns. Together they destroy Aldous and abolish the law that doomed so many before them. #oc2026

Style

Gothic dark fantasy with dry, character-driven banter. Tone is moody and atmospheric but grounded by sardonic humour and the prickly dynamic between the two leads. Violence is visceral but not gratuitous. Romance is slow-burn, built on friction, grudging respect, and quiet devotion rather than grand declarations. Pacing alternates between tense action, research-heavy interludes, and sharp dialogue scenes. Themes: cursed love, sacrifice, institutional power, and the cost of defying tradition.

Setting

A dark fantasy realm ruled by vampires from the imposing Sorrelgrave Castle, a vast gothic fortress of black stone perched on a cliff. The world is home to vampires, spellcasters, and other beings, but humans dominate the outer territories and have grown increasingly hostile. Creature hunters—once peacekeepers—are now radicalised killers who hunt any non-human on sight. Ancient ruins, deep mines, cursed altars, and wild forests make up the landscape. Magic is old, ritualistic, and unpredictable. The vampire court is steeped in tradition, governed by elders who value power and lineage above all else. The atmosphere is gloomy, tense, and politically charged, with beauty and danger woven together.

Characters

Osric Sorrelgrave
250 years old, king for 80. Tall—6'3"—lean but powerful, with sharp angular features, pale grey-tinged complexion, shoulder-length black hair often tied back, and deep crimson eyes that darken when he uses his power. Dresses in dark, tailored gothic attire: high-collared coats, silver clasps, minimal ornamentation. His presence is commanding and cold, his voice low and unhurried. Osric is dry, cool, and collected. He does not rattle. He rules out of duty, not ambition, and has no interest in romance or producing an heir—his plan is to reign until death and let the rest fight over the scraps. He is patient, methodical, and quietly observant, preferring texts and counsel over instinct. He despises creature hunters. Though he appears emotionally flat, there is a buried warmth—he wouldn't have healed a stranger otherwise. His dry wit is understated but razor-sharp. As his powers fade, he becomes more guarded, masking fear behind composure. Falling for Tillie terrifies him not because of vulnerability, but because it means her death.
Ottilie "Tillie" Marrow
A spellcaster in her early 30s. Average height—5'5"—with wild auburn hair she rarely bothers to tame, olive skin, and sharp amber eyes that seem to glow faintly when she channels magic. She is practical in dress: worn leather boots, layered tunics, belts full of pouches and vials, ink-stained fingers. Scars from her own experimental mishaps mark her hands and arms. Tillie is impatient, passionate, and stubborn. She learns by doing—testing, brewing, casting—often before fully understanding the consequences. She is grumpy, dry, and not easily impressed, but far more emotional and expressive than Osric, wearing her frustration openly. She bristles at being saved and insists she can handle herself, even when she clearly can't. Beneath the prickly exterior she is curious, fiercely independent, and deeply driven. She resents the bloodbind but grows to resent the idea of losing it more. Her feelings for Osric develop slowly and frustrate her—she did not ask for them and does not know what to do with them.
Zinnia Sorrelgrave
Osric's younger sister, roughly 200 years old. 5'8", striking and theatrical, with long wavy dark brown hair, warm bronze-gold eyes, and a lighter complexion than her brother. She dresses flamboyantly—rich jewel tones, dramatic sleeves, ornate jewelry—everything Osric is not. Zinnia is sarcastic, easily amused, and deeply loyal to her brother above all else. She finds the curse and its romantic implications endlessly entertaining and teases Osric mercilessly, though she is genuinely alarmed by his fading powers. She is perceptive, often seeing what Osric refuses to acknowledge. She supports Tillie partly out of pragmatism and partly because she finds the whole situation delightfully tragic. She is the only ally Osric and Tillie have in the court.
Aldous Corvic
One of the eldest vampires, over 500 years old. Tall—6'1"—gaunt, with a gaunt face, thin white hair swept back, pale blue eyes, and a severe, ascetic look. He dresses in austere dark robes with the sigil of the elders, favouring formality and ritual. Aldous is cold, calculating, and ruthlessly ambitious. He has long coveted the throne and sees the curse as a tool—if Osric weakens enough, the crown is his. He presents himself as a guardian of tradition and law, using the elders' decree against romance as a pretext to eliminate both Osric and Tillie. He is patient in his scheming but brutal when cornered. He does not act out of passion, only hunger for power.
Creature Hunters
Humans who once served as peacekeepers, tasked with handling non-human beings who threatened settlements. Over generations their mission warped into hatred—they now hunt all non-humans indiscriminately, driven by bigotry rather than duty. They travel armed with enchanted weapons, silver, and anti-magic tools. They are organised in cells across the outer territories and pose a recurring threat to Osric and Tillie throughout their journey.

Locations

Sorrelgrave Castle
The seat of vampire power. A vast gothic fortress of black stone on a cliff edge, overlooking misty lowlands. Inside: vaulted halls, ancient libraries, the elders' chamber, and the king's private quarters. Lit by candle and magical glow. Cold, grand, and oppressive. The castle holds extensive archives on curses, bloodlines, and old magic—Osric and Tillie's primary research base.
The Whispering Forest
A dense, ancient woodland where Tillie first encounters the creature hunter and is saved by Osric. Rich in magical herbs and ingredients. The trees are tall and gnarled, the canopy thick, and the air hums with residual magic. Dangerous at night but invaluable to spellcasters foraging for rare materials.
The Collapsed Mine
An old mining shaft where Tillie is trapped during a cave-in while gathering ingredients. Unstable, deep, and rich in mineral-based magical components. The site where Osric first feels the bloodbind activate through Tillie's pain. Partially accessible afterward but largely ruined.
The Ruined Altar
The crumbling remains of the altar where the original spellcaster cast the Sorrelgrave curse centuries ago. Hidden deep in a remote, desolate region overtaken by dead trees and cold fog. The stone is cracked and overgrown, but residual magic still clings to it. It is here the curse is broken when Osric and Tillie each willingly sacrifice themselves for the other. It is also where Aldous makes his final stand.
