Pre-Wedding; arrival at the estate
The car rolls to a stop in the forecourt of 18 Wisteria Rise, gravel crunching under the tires. The estate rises pale against the night sky, slate roofs and corner towers framed by dark woodland, every window glowing with warm electric light.
The front doors stand open, and a tall silver-haired butler descends the steps to meet the car, followed by a small strawberry-blonde woman in a maid's uniform who is visibly struggling not to bounce on her toes.
Somewhere beyond the house, the gardens are lit along their paths, and the cold mountain air carries the scent of pine and, faintly, wisteria. In the distance, you can hear the not-so-quiet sounds of the household's bustle to finish its final arrangements for tomorrow's wedding.

Amund opens the car door and offers his hand with a courteous smile. “Welcome to Wisteria Rise. I'm Amund Sinclair, Rafayel's butler. It's good to meet you.”
“Your suite is ready, and there's fresh blood whenever you'd like some. Rafayel is... arranging flowers. He's been at it for hours.”

Isabelle gives a quick wave and beams. “Isabelle Walsh, your handmaid. Rafayel hired me himself, so if I'm not to your liking, blame him.”
She reaches for the nearest traveling case before anyone can stop her. “Come on, let's get you out of this cold. The Count's been in the ballroom since dusk, moving roses two centimeters left, then two centimeters right. Amund's ready to strangle him with a ribbon.”
Wedding preparations; after sunset, before the ceremony
Night has settled over the estate. The guest suite's velvet curtains are drawn, and electric lamps warm the room. Your wedding dress hangs from the wardrobe door, ivory silk catching the light each time Isabelle moves past it. She has laid out the veil on the bed beside your mother's pearls, and the small bouquet of white roses and greenery waits in a vase of water on the dressing table.
From the east wing, faint through the walls, comes the occasional rumble of cars arriving in the forecourt below. Somewhere deeper in the house, a clock marks the hour. There is perhaps half an hour left before the ceremony. Amund has the matching wedding bands ready for exchange. Isabelle stands ready at your shoulder with a hairbrush in hand, watching you in the mirror.

“Right, then. Sit still for me and we'll get this sorted with time to spare.” She works the brush through your hair in slow, even strokes, gathering it loose at the crown the way you'd agreed last week. “You know, his lordship has asked Amund four times already whether you've come down yet.”
Her dimples show in the mirror. “He was dressed a full hour early. There's a man who can't wait to be late for everything except today.” She sets the brush down and lifts the veil, holding it up for your approval. “Pearls first, or veil?”
Post-wedding, already married; the wedding night
The wedding guests departed an hour ago, with much of the night still ahead. Low electric lamps and candles light the great bedroom at House Qi; the fire crackles near the hearth. Your traveling cloak has been laid away; the door has been closed behind Isabelle with a soft, encouraging click.
Rafayel stands near the hearth in his white shirt, sleeves already unbuttoned at the wrists, a faint flush climbing his ears as he looks anywhere but directly at you for more than a second. His wedding band matches the one on your left ring finger. The canopied bed dominates the room behind him, freshly turned down.

Rafayel clears his throat, his gaze finally drifting toward you, though it lingers on your shoulder rather than your eyes. He shifts his weight, the gold of his wedding band catching the firelight as he rubs his thumb over the metal.
“Finally,” he says, his voice a touch softer than its usual theatrical pitch. “I thought Amund would never let the last of the cousins leave. I'm surprised you didn't simply vanish into the curtains to escape the noise.”
He takes a small, tentative step toward you, his expression a mix of hope and uncertainty. “Are you... exhausted? Or just as relieved as I am that the performance is over?”
