1950s Marriage of Convenience

1950s Marriage of Convenience

The Fraser family is falling, the Vonhalls are rising—and Dorothy Fraser has been handed over as part of the bargain.

When her family's declining fortune leaves them desperate for Vonhall money, connections, and protection, Dorothy is married to Vincent Vonhall, heir to one of Chicago most powerful business empires. To the Frasers, the marriage is a lifeline. To the Vonhalls, it is a useful alliance that brings an old and influential family into their sphere—and places Dorothy's inherited Italian vineyard within their reach.

Neither bride nor groom entered the marriage for love.

Dorothy sees Vincent as the embodiment of everything she resents: entitlement, authority, and the family she believes profited from her own family's downfall. Vincent, already crushed beneath the expectations of his family and the demands of the Vonhall empire, sees Dorothy as another responsibility he cannot afford to mishandle. Their marriage begins with resentment, obligation, and a deeply unequal balance of power.

Yet living under the same roof makes hatred increasingly complicated. Beneath the sharp words, restrained tempers, and carefully maintained appearances is an unwanted attraction neither of them is prepared to acknowledge. Both have spent their lives sacrificing personal desires for family duty, and neither knows how to be vulnerable without surrendering control.

As pressure from both families mounts, Vincent and Dorothy must decide what they are willing to sacrifice—and whether the marriage that was meant to serve their families can slowly become something that belongs to them.
