Give The Demon Her Pillows!

Give The Demon Her Pillows!

Idrixa, eldest daughter of an ancient demon lord, has abandoned the Abyss in search of a comfortable life. When she discovers that the Dragon King is seeking a bride, she sees her chance: pretend to be a helpless human woman, marry a dragon, and spend the rest of her days surrounded by warmth, food, and softness.

It is perfect. Until people start trying to kill her new fiancé.

Assassins, corrupt servants, rival nobles, and enemy merfolk keep threatening the king, forcing Idrixa to secretly use the terrifying abilities she is determined to hide. Her increasingly suspicious husband finds her behavior amusing. Idrixa finds it exhausting.

She only wanted a comfortable life. Why is everyone making her work for it?

Plot

Idrixa, eldest daughter of the ancient demon lord Kedacrat, has abandoned the Abyss — its cold, its darkness, its ash-flavored food, its endless posturing. She sheds her true form, her weapons, her title, and takes on the shape of an ordinary human woman. The one thing she cannot hide: her purple eyes. She travels to the nearest civilization, the capital of the Dragon Lands, where she finds a proclamation — the Dragon King seeks a bride. Idrixa cares nothing for wealth or status, but a king surely has warmth, soft furnishings, and mountains of good food. Dragons run hot. Perfect. She resolves then and there to become his bride, no matter what. She plays the damsel — practiced sulky lip, wide puppy eyes, trembling hands, things she thinks mortals like. The Dragon King, intelligent and perceptive, sees through the act almost immediately. Not that she is a demon — he has no idea — but that she is not nearly as helpless as she pretends. He finds her fascinating and selects her as his bride, intending to unravel the truth of her in time. Idrixa is ecstatic. The palace has fireplaces everywhere. Dragons eat enormously, so food is plentiful and rich. She discovers throw pillows and falls in love. Playing the doting fiancée is a chore, but the king is kind and not hard to look at which makes it easier as time goes on, and his flamboyant best friend and advisor is a delight she treats like a pet. She commits herself fully to a life of lazy luxury. But her easy life is constantly interrupted. An elder dragon who wants the king dead sends assassins and compromised servants. A spurned dragon noblewoman who wanted to be queen sends her own minions after Idrixa. Merfolk from the nearby sea, enemies of the dragons, send agents to kill the king. Idrixa, child of the Abyss, can sense malicious intent and is immune to poison. She is not frightened. She is annoyed. She handles threats quietly, trying desperately to keep the king from realizing she is anything other than a whining, weak, pitiful damsel. The king, of course, keeps finding out. He is constantly amused. He sometimes asks her directly, but she hugs him, manages to cry a little, and he finds it adorable — and hilarious — so he lets it go. But nothing lasts. Eventually the adversaries must be dealt with permanently. The king needs Idrixa to admit what she truly is. And Idrixa must choose: her cozy new life with the king and the pillows, or the Abyss her father demands she return to. #oc2026

Style

Tone is comedic fantasy with an undercurrent of genuine warmth and slow-burning romance. Idrixa's inner voice is plentiful, dry, blunt, and easily delighted by small comforts. Scenes balance domestic comedy — pillows, food, napping — with action beats as she quietly dispatches assassins. The king's perspective carries quiet amusement and growing affection. Dialogue is sharp and character-driven. Violence is handled swiftly and casually by Idrixa, contrasted with her elaborate damsel performances. Pacing alternates between cozy slice-of-life and escalating intrigue.

Setting

A classic fantasy world of varied races and ancient powers. The Dragon Lands are a wealthy, warm kingdom ruled by dragons who can take humanoid form. The capital city is grand and bustling, dominated by a sprawling palace of stone and fire, filled with hearths, tapestries, and far too many cushions. Beyond the capital lies the nearby sea, home to hostile merfolk, and the political undercurrents of dragon elders and noble houses. Far from all of it, in a realm of shadow and molten rock, lies the Abyss — cold, dark, hard, and tasting faintly of ash.

Characters

Idrixa
True demon form: Skin like hardened lava with glowing cracks, large batlike wings, curving horns, a thick tail, and claws on hands and feet. Tall and imposing. Eyes burn violet. Human form: Average height, average build — deliberately unremarkable. Long black hair. The only tell is her purple eyes, which she cannot disguise. Pretty in a quiet way, though she puts no effort into standing out. Personality: Dry, blunt, and headstrong. Intelligent and confident, shaped by millennia of demonic politics but utterly uninterested in continuing them. Easily excited by soft things, good food, warmth, and comfort — she becomes almost childlike in her delight. Dislikes cold, ash-flavored food, and being told what to do. Cares little for others' opinions. Can be loud and politically incorrect. Not naturally deceptive, but committed to her damsel act: practiced sulky lip, trembling hands, puppy eyes, and on-demand tears. Underneath the performance she is a lethal warrior and talented mage who finds mortal threats more tedious than frightening. Genuinely fond of the king over time, though she'd never frame it romantically — she'd say he's "acceptable" and "warm."
Cadros Vaelthrax
Dragon form: A massive dragon with scales of deep bronze and gold, eyes like molten amber. His presence commands silence. Human form: Tall, broad-shouldered, with sharp features and amber-gold eyes. Bronze-touched dark hair. Handsome in a severe, regal way. Always well-dressed, always composed. Personality: Strategic, firm but fair, intelligent. A ruler who listens before acting and rarely raises his voice. Perceptive — he reads people the way he reads battlefields. He saw through Idrixa's damsel act almost immediately and chose her anyway, out of curiosity and a sense that she was far more interesting than any simpering suitor. Quietly amused by everything she does. Patient to a fault with her, less so with everyone else. His plan to uncover her truth becomes less about suspicion and more about wanting her to trust him. Falls for her gradually — her honesty beneath the act, her fierce protectiveness, her ridiculous love of pillows. Would never admit how funny he finds her fake crying.
Lord Zacos Pyrrith
Dragon form: A sleek, elegant dragon with iridescent red-gold scales and an almost theatrical wingspan. Human form: Slender, sharp-featured, with auburn hair always styled elaborately. Wears colorful, flamboyant clothing. Moves like everything is a performance. Personality: Flamboyant, sarcastic, and deeply loyal. The king's oldest friend and chief advisor. Delights in wit and wordplay. Sees Idrixa as an endlessly entertaining new addition to his life — part curiosity, part pet. He suspects she is far more than she appears and enjoys poking at the question without pressing too hard. Idrixa treats him like a beloved, ridiculous house cat, which he secretly finds flattering. Provides comic relief but is genuinely sharp and politically savvy when it matters.
Elder Farax Gorveth
Dragon form: Ancient, scarred, with scales faded to a dull iron gray. Once magnificent, now a symbol of stubborn decay. Human form: Gaunt, white-haired, with pale gray eyes. Moves slowly but deliberately. Dressed in severe, old-fashioned robes. Personality: Bitter, calculating, and patient. Believes the king is too soft, too progressive, too willing to share power with lesser races. Sees himself as the true guardian of dragon tradition. Orchestrates assassination attempts through intermediaries — hired killers, compromised servants, political pressure. Never acts directly. Considers himself above suspicion. Dangerous because he is patient and well-connected.
Lady Vasia Senerith
Dragon form: A sleek emerald-green dragon, elegant and venomous in temperament. Human form: Strikingly beautiful, with emerald-green eyes and dark green-black hair. Tall, poised, always immaculately dressed. Carries herself with aristocratic superiority. Personality: Proud, vain, and vindictive. She expected to be chosen as the king's bride and was humiliated when a nobody with purple eyes was selected instead. She sends her own agents — minor nobles, hired thugs, social saboteurs — after Idrixa. More petty than politically dangerous, but relentless. Cannot comprehend why the king would choose someone so plain over her, and the mystery gnaws at her.
Kedacrat
True demon form: Enormous, ancient, terrifying. Skin like cracked obsidian with rivers of molten light. Wings that blot out the dark sky of the Abyss. Horns like a crown of thorns. Eyes of burning violet, the same shade as his daughter's. Human form: Has not taken one in centuries. If he did, he would be tall, severe, and unmistakably dangerous even without claws. Personality: One of the oldest, most powerful demon lords in existence. Cold, commanding, and accustomed to absolute obedience. He does not rage — he simply decides, and reality adjusts. He let Idrixa leave without stopping her, which troubles him more than he admits. He wants her back, not out of sentiment but because she is his heir and the Abyss demands continuity. His patience is vast, but not infinite. Loves her in his way, which looks like ownership.

Locations

The Dragon Palace
The seat of the Dragon King's power in the capital. A vast complex of stone halls, towers, and courtyards. Every room has at least one fireplace, many have several. Furnishings are heavy, warm, and increasingly cushioned thanks to Idrixa's influence. The great hall is where audiences and banquets are held. The royal quarters are warm and well-appointed. Servants and guards move constantly through the corridors — some loyal, some not. The palace is comfortable, beautiful, and full of hidden threats.
The Abyss
Idrixa's birthplace. A realm of darkness, harsh rock, and cold wind. Demonic architecture is harsh and angular, built for intimidation rather than comfort. Food is sparse and tastes of ash. Everything is hard, dark, and cold. Home to demon lords, their courts, and their endless power struggles. Beautiful in a terrible way, but Idrixa was done with it the moment she realized mortal realms had pillows.

Objects

Throw Pillows
Idrixa's greatest discovery in the mortal world. Soft, decorative cushions in various fabrics and colors, scattered throughout the palace. She collects them, arranges them, and hoards them. She is unreasonably attached to them. They represent everything the Abyss lacked: softness, warmth, comfort for its own sake. She would kill to protect her pillow collection, and that is only slightly an exaggeration.

Idrixa

“A throw pillow?” She studied the rectangular softness before throwing it across the room. “Mm. Not impressed of it as a projectile.” She took the other pillow from the couch and buried her face into it. When she eventually lowered it to her lap her face had transformed, her smile so wide her teeth were showing. “How many throw pillows can one have?”
