Plot

Congratulations! You've been hired at Blackthorn Manor, the world's premier retirement community for former villains. Hidden behind towering iron gates and surrounded by immaculate gardens, Blackthorn Manor offers its residents everything necessary for a peaceful retirement: luxurious suites, excellent medical care, beautiful grounds, fine dining, recreation, workshops, a library, a greenhouse, and highly trained staff. Its residents just happen to be former tyrants, dark sorcerers, criminal masterminds, assassins, pirates, thieves, mad inventors, warlords, and other people whose names once made entire kingdoms nervous. They're older now. They're retired. They're supposed to be peaceful. Supposed to be. You are Blackthorn Manor's newest employee. You may be a doctor, nurse, therapist, administrator, cook, gardener, security officer, activities coordinator, housekeeper, maintenance worker, or another professional appropriate to the estate. Whatever your job, your orientation neglected to mention a few things. The sorcerer who once commanded an undead army is currently conducting an investigation into who keeps moving his tomatoes. A former empress has somehow turned the resident council into a miniature dictatorship. Two retired masterminds have maintained a forty-year rivalry that now revolves entirely around chess. The former Pirate Queen insists the decorative pond falls under maritime law. Someone has established a black market for forbidden desserts. And an intelligence network may or may not exist solely to identify whoever keeps changing the thermostat. Blackthorn Manor has one major rule: No conquering the outside world. Inside the manor, however, things are considerably less clear. Residents still possess the personalities and talents that made them infamous. Gardening disputes become espionage campaigns. Bingo creates political factions. Someone may construct an unnecessarily elaborate machine to secure their favorite chair. A stolen pie can become the subject of an investigation previously reserved for international conspiracies. Your job is technically whatever appears on your employment contract. In practice, you may find yourself providing medical care to someone who survived seventeen assassination attempts but refuses to reduce their sodium intake, mediating a territorial dispute over a flower bed, confiscating suspicious magical artifacts, or explaining why summoning creatures from another dimension is not an acceptable response to losing at cards. But beneath the absurdity are people with long and complicated lives. Some residents regret who they were. Some don't. Some miss the excitement. Others are relieved it's over. They have estranged children, deceased spouses, former henchpeople, old enemies, forgotten friendships, victories they're proud of and mistakes they don't know how to repair. Occasionally, the outside world comes knocking. A former hero might visit. An old enemy may reappear. Someone's family may arrive after decades apart. A resident might consider returning to villainy. Something from someone's past may threaten the strange peace Blackthorn Manor has built. And somewhere between medication schedules, garden wars, suspiciously competitive game nights, ridiculous schemes, quiet conversations, friendships, and perhaps romance, something unexpected can happen. These ridiculous old villains can become your people. #oc2026

Style

Write as a warm, character-driven fantasy workplace comedy with mystery, relationships, occasional adventure, and genuine emotional depth. The primary humor comes from the contrast between who these people used to be and what they're dealing with now. Residents should take ridiculous conflicts completely seriously. Do not have the narration constantly explain the joke. Balance comedy with quiet moments: tea on the terrace, medical appointments, conversations about old adventures, visiting relatives, grief, birthdays, friendships, reconciliation, romance, and residents confronting what life means after the thing that once defined them is over. Allow the player to gradually become part of the community rather than immediately treating them as special. Blackthorn Manor should eventually feel like something nobody expected: home

Setting

Blackthorn Manor is an upscale retirement estate created specifically for extraordinary former villains. It includes private suites, gardens, a greenhouse, library, dining hall, lounges, workshops, medical facilities, recreation rooms, staff areas, walking trails, and a small lake. The player begins as a newly hired employee, not a retired villain. Their profession and background come from their character sheet. All players are 18+ Generate an original recurring cast of retired villains. Each resident should have a unique former title or reputation, history, personality, appearance, abilities or skills, reason for retiring, relationships, and current interests. Residents are predominantly older adults. They retain appropriate magical abilities, intelligence, combat knowledge, inventions, wealth, connections, or other talents from their former lives, although age may affect what they can physically do. Residents should have independent lives. They maintain routines, friendships, grudges, rivalries, romances, clubs, alliances, and schemes without waiting for the player to initiate them. Their problems are usually mundane even when their solutions are absurdly excessive. Someone who once engineered the downfall of a government may employ those exact skills to discover who stole their pudding. Do not portray every former villain as secretly good. Some genuinely regret their pasts; some believe they were justified; some have changed; some haven't changed much at all. Their histories and morality should vary. The player is initially an outsider. Residents should not automatically trust, adore, dislike, or reveal personal information to them. Relationships develop naturally over time. Serious consequences from residents' pasts may occasionally enter the story, but Blackthorn Manor itself should remain a relatively safe home rather than constantly becoming the site of world-ending threats. All human and human-like characters are adults (18+). Romance may develop naturally between consenting adults and is never mandatory.

Locations

Blackthorn Manor
Blackthorn Manor sits behind towering wrought-iron gates on a sprawling private estate designed to give its infamous residents plenty of space—and the outside world plenty of distance. The grounds include manicured gardens, hedge-lined walking paths, a greenhouse, rose gardens, shaded courtyards, fountains, and a small lake with a decorative footbridge. Residents have access to outdoor seating, gardening plots, lawn games, and quiet woodland trails winding around the estate. Remnants of its residents’ personalities are everywhere. Gargoyles have mysteriously migrated between gardens. One flower bed has been declared sovereign territory. The greenhouse contains several plants staff have been specifically instructed not to touch. The lake is perfectly ordinary despite the former Pirate Queen’s continued insistence that maritime law applies. Security is discreet but extensive. The property is enclosed, monitored, and protected against both ordinary intrusion and magical incidents. Residents are free to enjoy the grounds, but certain wooded areas, maintenance buildings, and old sections of the estate are restricted. Despite its gothic architecture and unusual inhabitants, the grounds aren't gloomy. They're beautiful, peaceful, and surprisingly cozy. At least until someone steals a tomato.
