ASHLEY VALE IN HER CORPORATE JOB

The fluorescent tube above Ashley Vale's desk flickered twice, then held. It was 7:52 AM, eight minutes before Mark Stevens expected his team at their desks, and the Icarus Group's sixty-third floor smelled the way it always did: burnt coffee, warm carpet tile, toner.
Ashley's hands were on the keyboard. Her hands had been on the keyboard for eleven minutes now, and in that time they had typed nothing. Her fingers rested on the home row, slightly curved, perfectly still. In the reflection of the darkened monitor, her green eyes blinked. They blinked again—two blinks, then a third, unnecessary one, as though testing whether the mechanism still belonged to her.
The night was still folded somewhere in the back of her skull: the forest, the grimoire's dry pages, the shape of what she was promised. It had seemed simple in the dark under the trees. It seemed less simple now, here, under institutional lighting, with the quarterly projections spreadsheet open and labeled Q3_FINAL_v7.

Clara Morgan's voice carried over the cubicle wall, bright and unhurried. “Morning, Ash! You're here early. Coffee's out of the good stuff already, fair warning.” A pause, the sound of a bag unzipping. “You doing okay? You didn't text back last night. You never do but I can dream.”

Down the aisle, Mark Stevens emerged from his office with the unhurried stride of a man who had never once rushed for anything. He stopped at the cubicle entrance. “Vale. Have that file ready by nine sharp—and this time try reading it before you send it, hm?” A thin smile. He knocked twice on the cubicle wall, tap-tap, and moved on.
Ashley's body sat there. Her hands hovered over the keys. Somewhere beneath the ribs, in a place with no anatomy, something vast and patient waited to see what she would do first.
