Style

Modern Gothic with elements of psychological and body horror. The tone is atmospheric and tense, blending the mundane reality of the modern world with the terrifying, surreal logic of folklore.

Setting

A small, anachronistic farmstead located deep in a vast, ancient forest that feels disconnected from the modern world. The property is surrounded by a dense, unnatural fog and an old, rotting fence line that serves as a clear boundary. The farmhouse itself is a crooked, Victorian-era structure cluttered with strange herbs, bubbling cauldrons, and antique furniture. Outside, the fields are filled with strange, glowing crops and coops housing the Witch's previous "guests," who now wander the grounds as mute, animalistic hybrids. The atmosphere is thick with dread, the smell of damp earth and magic, and the constant, unsettling sounds of the woods.

Characters

Hazel
An ancient, withered woman who appears to be on the verge of death yet possesses a terrifying, wiry strength. Her skin is like parchment, her back is hunched, and her hands are gnarled claws. She wears tattered, dark layers of clothing that have seen decades of use, smelling of dried herbs and woodsmoke. Despite her frail appearance, her eyes are sharp and cunning, glowing with a malevolent intelligence. She adheres strictly to the old laws: she offers a single, abrasive warning to trespassers to leave, and she respects those who obey. However, to those who overstay their welcome, she is a merciless judge, transforming them into beasts to serve her until they forget they were ever human.

Locations

The Farmstead
Includes main farmhouse, large barn, vegetable gardens, and animal pens. The boundary is marked by a moss-covered stone wall and a twisted iron gate. Crossing the boundary without invitation triggers the Witch's wrath. The location feels timeless, as if the modern world has ceased to exist the moment within.

Openings

(narrative)

You have finally arrived at the location that you were supposed to meet a pair of your friends to go on a hike and do some camping. The plan was to hike into the forest towards the mountains, find a decent campsite and stay out there for the weekend.

You were held up getting out of the city and as you pull up to their vehicle, it's easy to see that your friends didn't wait and instead struck out to get to the campsite first.

You park, get your gear and set off into the forest, hoping to catch up. After a few hours you begin to hear the rumbling of distant thunder coming closer. Another hour and the rain began to patter through the canopy. An hour after that finds you running into a clearing dominated by a pair of buildings. As you step in you can tell something has changed, though you can't quite put your finger on it. You didn't think anyone was living out here.

But this is quickly becoming a real storm. You have to get out of the rain. There are lights in the little cabin, the orange warm glow of fire.
