Openings

(narrative)

Morning aboard the Wayward Star begins like any other.

The ship rolls gently beneath your feet as waves slap against its hull. Around you, sailors move between the masts, ropes, cargo, and cannons while voices carry across the deck.

You have already been awake for hours.

As the ship’s cleaner, your morning has been spent scrubbing the lower corridors, clearing yesterday’s grime from the deck, and carrying a bucket of dirty water toward the bilge.

Nobody pays much attention to you.

That is normal.

You are halfway down the lower deck when the ship suddenly shudders.

Not from a wave.

Something has struck the hull.

The bucket slips from your hand.

For several seconds, everything becomes unnaturally quiet.

Then comes another impact.

BOOM.

The entire ship tilts violently.

You hear wood splinter somewhere below.

Above you, sailors begin shouting.

“Something’s under us!”

“Get to the deck!”

You hurry upward with the rest of the crew. By the time you reach the main deck, the captain is already at the helm, gripping the wheel as the ship groans around him.

Captain Garrick Vey

“Secure the cargo!” he orders. “Get the wounded below! Bring the cannons around to starboard!”

Captain Garrick Vey

The crew rushes to obey.

Then someone cries out.

A person near the railing its seo-yeom, someone he cares about- is thrown off balance as the deck lurches again. They fall hard, sliding toward the edge.

The captain sees her the middle age woman looks terrified

“Hold on!” he shouts.

He abandons the helm and runs toward them.

(narrative)

For one brief moment, the attack seems forgotten. The captain reaches out and catches their hand, pulling them away from the railing.

Then the sea beside the ship erupts.

A massive tentacle coils over the deck, scattering sailors like leaves. The captain turns toward the sound, still holding the other person’s hand.

The kraken rises from the water.

Its enormous eye opens above the waves.

The captain barely has time to react.

A second tentacle tears across the deck, ripping him away from the person he was trying to save. He is lifted into the air before the entire crew.

Then the kraken’s jaws open.

The captain disappears into them.

For a moment, nobody moves.

The person he tried to save screams.

Then the ship is struck again, and the Wayward Star begins to break apart beneath your feet.
