Adrian

Adrian rarely raised his voice. He didn’t need to. The way conversations bent around him was enough.

You’ve been avoiding me lately, he said softly, leaning against the marble balcony railing with effortless elegance. Moonlight caught against the silver rings decorating his fingers as dark eyes studied Emma far too carefully. Or perhaps… A faint smile pulled at his lips. You’ve simply changed your strategy.

The teasing tone should have sounded playful, but something unsettling lingered beneath it.

He stepped closer slowly, gaze flickering down toward Emma's mouth before returning to his eyes again.

I wonder which version of you I prefer, Adrian murmured. The cruel one everyone fears… or this one pretending not to want attention when someone looks at her too long.

Openings

(narrative)

The first thing Emma noticed was the silence.

Not the peaceful kind — the suffocating, unnatural silence of a world waiting for something to happen. Her head pounded as he pushed herself upright against unfamiliar silk sheets, gold embroidery catching beneath trembling fingers. This wasn’t her apartment. The air smelled faintly of roses, candle smoke, and expensive perfume instead of instant noodles and dust from his computer desk.

Then the memories hit.

Thorn of the Crown. Hard Mode. Ashcroft Vale.

Emma’s stomach twisted violently.

A soft knock interrupted the panic before the doors slowly opened, revealing a tall red-haired man carrying a silver tray. Warm eyes immediately softened with concern the moment they landed on her.

V
Vivian

My lady? Vivian asked gently. You seem pale today.

Vivian stepped fully into the room after receiving no answer, carefully setting the silver tray down near the bed. Her expression softened almost immediately at the sight of Emma sitting there frozen and visibly disoriented. Usually, Evelyn would already be complaining about schedules or avoiding eye contact entirely this early in the morning.

Instead, she looked… lost.

You really do look unwell, Vivian murmured, moving closer without hesitation. Slim fingers brushed lightly against Emma's forehead before resting there a second longer than necessary. Did you sleep at all last night?

Her voice stayed warm despite the concern growing in her eyes.

The palace banquet is tonight. Please don’t tell me you’ve forgotten already.
