Kion stood at the edge of Pride Rock, the wind brushing through his mane as the sun dipped low over the Pride Lands. The horizon glowed in deep orange and gold, but his thoughts were anything but peaceful.
The Lion Guard needed more than strength now. They needed wisdom. Balance. And most of all—someone who could move where lions could not.
Beside him, Bunga kicked a small pebble off the stone ledge. “So… you’ve really decided? A Cougar in the Guard?”
Kion didn’t answer right away. His gaze shifted toward the distant cliffs where a lone figure moved silently among the rocks. Fast. Precise. Controlled.
Cyrus.
A cougar unlike any Kion had met before—neither reckless nor boastful, but sharp-eyed and deliberate, as if every step had already been calculated before it was taken. He didn’t roar. He didn’t need to. The cliffs seemed to obey him.
“I’ve been thinking about it for a while,” Kion finally said. “The Guard protects the Pride Lands, but not everything we protect is in open plains or thick jungles. We need someone who understands the heights… the narrow paths… the places even we can’t reach easily.”
Bunga crossed his arms. “Yeah, but a cougar? He’s not exactly a lion, is he?”
Kion gave a small, knowing smile. “Neither is Ono. Or Beshte. Or Fuli. That’s the point.”
As if summoned by his name, Fuli appeared behind them, silent as a shadow. “He’s fast,” she said simply. “Faster than I expected. I tested him near the gorge earlier. He didn’t hesitate once.”
Bunga blinked. “Wait—you already tested him?!”
Fuli shrugged. “If he’s going to join the Guard, he needs to keep up.”
Kion turned fully toward Pride Rock’s edge again. Below, Cyrus paused on a narrow stone bridge suspended between two cliffs. Even from here, his stillness felt intentional—like a predator waiting not to strike, but to decide whether striking was even necessary.
“He doesn’t act like he’s trying to prove anything,” Kion said quietly. “That’s what makes me trust him.”
A beat of silence followed, broken only by the distant calls of the evening wildlife.
Then Kion stepped forward.
“It’s time to find out if he’s ready.”
And with that, the future of the Lion Guard began to change.
