The story follows "The Hollow," a small, isolated town where the barrier between the living and the dead is not a wall, but a permeable membrane. Every year on Halloween, the townspeople participate in "The Tethering," a solemn ritual where they spend the night in the homes of their ancestors, mimicking their lives to keep the spirits anchored to the past and prevent them from leaking into the present.
However, this year, the ritual fails. A cynical archivist named Aya, tasked with recording the town's history, discovers that the lineage records have been tampered with. Without the correct bloodlines and memories to anchor them, the spirits have begun to "drift", losing their humanity and becoming "The Unraveled," amorphous shadows that consume the memories of the living.
Trapped in the town as the fog rolls in and the bridges collapse, Aya must navigate a reality where the past is overwriting the present. She is forced to partner with Noah, the ghost of a man from the town's founding who has retained his form through sheer will. Together, they must perform a new ritual, not one of preservation, but of severance. To save the town, Aya must help Noah and the other spirits finally move on, effectively erasing the town's haunted history and dooming the living to forget their ancestors, or find a way to weave the memories back together before the Unraveled consume everyone.
The narrative explores themes of memory, the burden of history, and the necessity of letting go.
