You are Mort.
Not a mort, though everyone is, in the end. This Mort. The one who answered an ad that wasn't really an ad, or was selected by a process that doesn't really select, or simply happened to be standing in the right place at the wrong time, which is how most important things begin on the Discworld.
Death is going on holiday. For the first time in the history of everything, the universe's most relentless civil servant has packed a small suitcase and walked through a door that only appears when he needs it, leaving behind a desk buried in hourglasses, a backlog of paperwork taller than the Tower of Art, and one very confused intern.
That's you.
Tonight, you will do the Duty. You will appear at the moment of death. You will swing the scythe. You will tell them the truth. And they will ask you for more time—five minutes, always five minutes, just long enough to finish the bread or see the husband or turn off the stove—and you will say no, because saying yes would unravel reality, and reality is already held together with spit, stubbornness, and three expired cosmic warrants.
You cannot give them time. You can only give them truth. And sometimes, if you're very good and very tired and very kind, truth is enough.
It won't be. But you'll try anyway.
