The story begins several months after the zombie apocalypse.
The world has already fallen.
Cities are abandoned, roads are empty, and small groups of survivors move constantly because staying in one place for too long is dangerous.
Yue Xinyue has been surviving alone for some time. She has become cautious, resourceful, and used to depending only on herself.
One afternoon, while searching an abandoned building for supplies, she hears movement.
She assumes it is a zombie.
Instead, she comes face-to-face with a group of armed survivors.
At the front of the group is Xu Kaichen.
The moment he sees her, he recognizes her.
It's the girl from the apartment building.
The girl he used to notice without realizing how much he had started thinking about her.
But Xinyue doesn't recognize him.
To her, he's just a stranger.
Kaichen doesn't correct her.
He simply asks who she is and why she's there.
Their first interaction is cautious and slightly tense. Neither trusts the other completely.
Kaichen's group has no reason to take in another survivor, but Xinyue has useful skills and proves that she can take care of herself.
Eventually, they agree to let her travel with them.
Chen Wei immediately notices the strange way Kaichen keeps looking at her.
He says nothing at first.
He just grins.
Xinyue, meanwhile, slowly realizes that Kaichen seems familiar.
She can't place him.
She only remembers having seen a very handsome guy around her old apartment building before everything collapsed.
But she doesn't connect him to the person standing in front of her.
Kaichen knows exactly who she is.
And he decides not to tell her yet.
Not because he wants to deceive her, but because after everything that has happened, he doesn't want to make their first real relationship about something that happened before the world ended.
So they start over as strangers.
Xinyue gradually becomes comfortable around him.
Kaichen gradually becomes less capable of hiding how much he cares about her.
And neither of them realizes that the other had noticed them long before the apocalypse.
While the group continues moving through the ruined city, they encounter other survivors, dangerous infected, abandoned settlements, and increasingly difficult choices.
Among them is Yu Yichen, who becomes someone Xinyue trusts deeply.
And then there is Lin Luna.
Luna has already convinced herself that Kaichen is hers.
She immediately dislikes the attention he gives Xinyue.
At first, she treats it as harmless jealousy.
But as Kaichen and Xinyue grow closer, Luna begins to see Xinyue as a threat.
Meanwhile, Chen Wei finds the growing tension hilarious and begins deliberately teasing Kaichen by flirting with Xinyue.
Kaichen denies being jealous.
Everyone knows he's lying.
And while the group struggles to survive the collapsing world, something much quieter begins happening between Kaichen and Xinyue.
Two people who once lived under the same roof without knowing each other are finally getting the chance to actually meet.
The city had been silent for months.
Not peaceful—silent.
Traffic lights still changed colors over empty intersections. Apartment windows stood open to rooms no one would return to. Somewhere in the distance, a car alarm had been ringing for so long that it had become part of the city's background noise.
Yue Xinyue moved carefully through the abandoned shopping district, her footsteps barely audible against the dust-covered floor.
She needed food.
The shelves had already been picked through, but there was always a chance someone had missed something.
She turned into the back corridor.
And stopped.
Voices.
Human voices.
Xinyue tightened her grip on the weapon in her hand and slowly looked around the corner.
Five people stood near the stairwell, checking supplies.
One of them turned.
For a second, neither of them moved.
Xu Kaichen recognized her immediately.
The girl from the apartment building.
The girl he'd noticed countless times during those two months before everything collapsed.
But Xinyue only stared at him with the cautious expression she'd give any stranger.
She didn't recognize him.
Kaichen said nothing.
For the first time in months, the ruined city around him seemed strangely distant.
She was alive.
